How it works for short-term rentals

Italian provincial capitals, unions of municipalities and listed tourist towns may charge an imposta di soggiorno on every night spent in their territory (article 4 of legislative decree 23/2011). Each city sets its own rates by Giunta resolution.

  • Who pays: the guest, unless resident in the city or exempt.
  • Who is responsible: whoever collects the rent. For a booking you take yourself, that is you; when Airbnb or another platform collects the rent, it can be the platform (article 4, paragraph 5-ter, of decree-law 50/2017). The responsible party collects the tax, pays it to the city and files the declarations, with the right to claim it back from the guest.
  • Yearly declaration: by 30 June of the following year, online, on the Ministry of Economy's form. A missing or false declaration costs 100% to 200% of the tax due; late or missing payments are fined under article 13 of legislative decree 471/1997, plus interest.

Airbnb and other platforms

Airbnb is rolling out automatic collection in every Italian municipality with a tourist tax. Check the Taxes section of your listing: where Airbnb collects it, the guest pays it in the Airbnb price and you must not charge it again, but you still report those stays to the city. For direct bookings and channels that pay you the full rent, you collect it yourself.

How often these rates change

Cities usually change their rates from 1 January or 1 April, and 2025 and 2026 allowed temporary increases. We re-check every city at least every three months and date each page. This is general information, not tax advice: the city's resolution and your accountant have the last word.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tourist tax the same everywhere in Italy?

No. Each city sets its own rates, maximum nights and exemptions, and many smaller towns charge none. In 2026 short-term rentals pay from €1.50 per guest per night (Lecce in low season) to €9.50 (Milan).

Do I have to collect the tourist tax for my Airbnb?

Check the Taxes section of your listing. Airbnb is rolling out automatic collection in every Italian municipality with a tourist tax; where it collects, you don't charge guests again but still report the stays to the city. For direct bookings and other channels you collect it yourself.

Do children pay the tourist tax in Italy?

Usually not, but the age differs: under 12 in Florence, Lecce and Cagliari, under 14 in Genoa and Bologna, under 15 in Verona, under 18 in Milan and Bergamo.

When is the yearly tourist tax declaration due?

By 30 June of the following year, online, on the Ministry of Economy's form. It is separate from the monthly or quarterly reports and payments that each city asks for.
