What to put in your house rules
Good house rules are short, specific and friendly. Guests read them on their phone before they book and again on a sign when they arrive, so every rule should answer a question a guest would actually have:
- Quiet hours with exact times (for example 22:00 to 08:00), especially in apartment buildings where neighbours complain.
- Smoking, including balconies and e-cigarettes.
- Parties and events: Airbnb bans disruptive parties worldwide; say it anyway.
- Maximum guests and visitors, so the number of people matches your insurance and local rules.
- Pets: allowed or not, and where they may go.
- Check-in and check-out times, and what to do on departure.
- Trash and recycling: guests from abroad don't know your local sorting rules.
Where to use them
- In the house rules field of your Airbnb listing (and Booking.com or Vrbo): guests accept them when they book.
- On a printed sign by the door or on the fridge.
- In your welcome message a day before arrival.
Keep the same rules everywhere. If something goes wrong, rules the guest accepted at booking and saw on the wall are much easier to rely on in a damage claim.
Frequently asked questions
What are standard Airbnb house rules?
Most hosts cover quiet hours, no smoking, no parties or events, the maximum number of guests, visitors, pets, check-in and check-out times, and how to handle trash. Airbnb also lets you set rules for commercial photography and extra fees in your listing settings.
Can I write Airbnb house rules in another language?
Yes. Airbnb shows your text as you wrote it and can machine-translate it for guests. A sign in the guest's own language is clearer than an automatic translation, which is why the generator outputs 28 languages.
Are house rules legally binding?
Rules a guest accepted when booking are part of the agreement on Airbnb, Booking.com and Vrbo, and they help in disputes and damage claims. They don't replace local laws; this generator gives general information, not legal advice.
How many house rules should I have?
Usually 6 to 10. Long lists get skipped; keep the rules that prevent real problems in your place and write them with exact times and numbers.
